How Medigap differs from Medicare Advantage
Medigap does not replace Original Medicare, it pays after it. You keep your red, white, and blue Medicare card and can see any doctor nationwide who accepts Medicare assignment, with no network restrictions and no referrals.
Because Medigap policies are standardized by letter, a Plan G from one carrier covers the same benefits as a Plan G from another. What differs is the monthly premium and the carrier's rate history.
- No provider networks, useful if you travel or split time out of state
- Predictable out-of-pocket costs each year
- Standardized benefits by plan letter across carriers
- Prescription drug coverage is purchased separately as a Part D plan
